Are We Radiant?

From Janelle:

Does anyone know anything about radiant heated floors?  Warm toes on a cool winter morning sound amazingly enticing but does the comfort value outweigh the expense?  We have also heard horror stories about busted pipes ruining hard wood floors.  Is it worth it?  If you have a story to tell, please shout it out!

From Lewis:

I am a radiant heater so no need to spend extra money on something that will not really save anything in energy bills in the long run, especially since we are over budget anyway.

Janelle I lost that battle too. I figured since fhe floors were already out why not go all the way and add it. His argument was “why radiant heat when we live in So. California!” So I got a “small” compromise…we installed it in the new “small” guest bath & mudroom. We do have it on a timer so the cost really isn’t that big for us but then again neither is the bath! However, I will say this… On a crisp morning before stepping into the shower and then after when you step out, there IS nothing like having warm toes which then warms the whole body!! If I was to do it again I would SO install it everywhere! Sorry Louis…

  2. It sounds lovely lovely lovely but it’s expensive. We are in full debate mode!

Look at the information on the web site for Radiant Engineering Inc. They patented the extruded aluminum heat transfer plate called ThermoFin, which has been used in demos on This Old House, PBS tv program. Just google “Radiant Engineering Inc”. Contact them from their website. They also have a facebook and pinterest page. They are in Montana and are real experts in designing custom radiant heating systems appropriately.
